The overnight ratings are in for the final episode of the new series. ‘The Beginning’ was viewed by 975k people across Dave and Dave Ja Vu in its initial airing. This is down 0.2m on last week. Not including Dave Ja Vu it clocks in as Dave’s eighth highest overnight rating behind 6 new episodes of Red Dwarf (‘Back to Earth’ Episode 1 and 3, ‘Trojan’, ‘Fathers and Suns’, ‘Lemons’ and ‘Dear Dave’ as well as a repeat of ‘Gunmen of the Apocalypse’).
At the same time competition was much higher than last week. It was the toughest competition new Red Dwarf has faced on Dave.
BBC One drama flop Hunted fell even further from last week from 3.08m to 2.59m.
ITV1 drama DCI Banks achieved 3.69m.
Big competition came from the premier of The Inbetweeners Movie which achieved 2.78m.
BBC Two had a strong performance with their documentary Great Continental Railway Journeys. It recorded 2.55m viewers in the 9pm hour.
Russell Howard’s Good News was nearly 0.3m down on the previous week to 0.653m viewers in the 9pm hour. This is one of the lowest ratings ever for Good News.
The Europa League was strong competition too. Over the 6 hours and a half as Liverpool and Tottenham played, 1.27m watched ITV4.
Series Overnight Ratings
Below is a chart with the ratings for the first showing on Dave and Dave Ja Vu. The Dave Ja Vu ratings for ‘Dear Dave’ have not been released.
At an average of over 1.1m, Red Dwarf X has proved incredibly strong for Dave. The share of the audience also shows a strong following for Red Dwarf. Compare the average share of 5.15% to the average audience share for Dave and Dave Ja Vu for September and October 2012 (1.2% for both) to see just how strong Red Dwarf X is compared with the normal Dave line-up.
The final consolidated figures for ‘Entangled’ have not been released by the BARB.
The overnight ratings are in for Episode 5 of the new series. ‘Dear Dave’ was viewed by 1.082m people across Dave and Dave Ja Vu in its initial airing. This is up nearly 0.1m on last week. Not including Dave Ja Vu it clocks in as Dave’s fifth highest overnight rating behind 4 new episodes of Red Dwarf (‘Back to Earth’ Episode 1, ‘Trojan’, ‘Fathers and Suns’ and ‘Lemons’).
At the same time competition was lower than last week.
BBC One drama Hunted fell even further from last week from 3.22m to 3.08m.
ITV1 drama Homefront clocked in yet another poor primetime rating for ITV with just 2.46m at the 9pm hour, though this is a good third of a million up on last week.
BBC Two had a strong performance with their new documentary series Operation Iceberg. It recorded 2.71m viewers in the 9pm hour.
Russell Howard’s Good News was over 0.2m up on the previous week to 0.925m viewers in the 9pm hour.
Lemons Consolidated Ratings
Several of the consolidated figures for ‘Lemons’ are in.
The first Dave airing on Thursday at 9pm achieved 1.16m on the overnight. This risen nearly 0.4m to 1.519m in the final consolidated figure.
The Dave Ja Vu airing on Thursday at 10pm had an overnight of 0.068m. This risen to 0.106m in the final consolidated figure.
The second Dave airing on Thursday at 11:40pm achieved a consolidated figure of 0.457m. This is another impressive figure for such a late night slot.
The third Dave airing on Saturday at 10pm achieved a consolidated figure of 0.487m.
Adding the available consolidated figures together shows that 2.57m people have viewed Red Dwarf in some form across the multiple airings.
The overnight ratings are in for Episode 4 of the new series. ‘Entangled’ was viewed by 1.002m people across Dave and Dave Ja Vu in its initial airing. This is down around 200k on last week. Not including Dave Ja Vu it clocks in as Dave’s seventh highest overnight rating behind 5 new episodes of Red Dwarf (‘Back to Earth’ Episode 1 and 3, ‘Trojan’, ‘Fathers and Suns’ and ‘Lemons’) and a repeat of ‘Gunmen of the Apocalypse’ which followed ‘Back to Earth’ Episode 1 originally airing.
At the same time competition was higher than last week.
BBC One drama Hunted was slightly down from last week from 3.44m to 3.22m.
ITV1 drama Homefront clocked in yet another poor primetime rating for ITV with just 2.1m at the 9pm hour, even further down on last week.
BBC Two had a strong performance with their documentary series The Choir. It recorded 2.92m viewers in the 9pm hour, up slightly on last week.
Biggest competition was from the Europa League on ITV4. Over 2 million Liverpool fans elected to watch something much rarer than a new episode of Red Dwarf, a Stewart Downing goal, as Liverpool beat Anzhi Makhachkala. The Europa League powered ITV4 to its highest ever share of audience in the channel’s history.
Russell Howard’s Good News was down 0.72m viewers in the 9pm hour, damaged by a head to head airing with Red Dwarf and the Europa League.
Fathers and Suns Consolidated Ratings
Several of the consolidated figures for ‘Fathers and Suns’ are in.
The first Dave airing on Thursday at 9pm achieved 1.1m on the overnight. This risen over 0.4m to 1.567m in the final consolidated figure.
The Dave Ja Vu airing on Thursday at 10pm had an overnight of 0.034m. This risen to 0.078m in the final consolidated figure.
The second Dave airing on Thursday at 11:40pm achieved a consolidated figure of 0.459m. This is another impressive figure for such a late night slot.
The third Dave airing on Saturday at 10pm achieved a consolidated figure of 0.489m.
Adding the available consolidated figures together shows that 2.64m people have viewed Red Dwarf in some form across the multiple airings.
The overnight ratings are in for Episode 3 of the new series. ‘Lemons’ was viewed by 1.23m people across Dave and Dave Ja Vu in its initial airing. This is up 0.1m on ‘Fathers and Suns’. It takes ‘Fathers and Suns’ place as being the third highest overnight for Dave in its history.
More good news comes in the form of demographic skew. ‘Lemons’ had a 3.7 ratings in the 16-34 demographic. A 3.7 ratings puts it above a good amount of ITV’s best rating programming. It also rated very well in the ABC1 demographic. It skewed 58% in the ABC1 demographic which is way above the normal for any programming on TV, on BBC or ITV. At the same time competition was relatively lower than last week.
BBC One drama Hunted was practically flat, just 0.02m up from last week to 3.44m.
ITV1 drama Homefront clocked in another poor primetime rating for ITV with just 2.34m at the 9pm hour.
BBC Two had a strong performance with their documentary series The Choir. It recorded 2.84m viewers in the 9pm hour.
Russell Howard’s Good News recovered some viewers lost in the last two weeks to achieve 0.86m viewers in the 9pm hour but it is still clearly damaged by a head to head airing with Red Dwarf.
Trojan Consolidated Ratings
Several of the consolidated figures for ‘Trojan’ are in. As ‘Back to Earth’ shown, the overnights don’t give a full view of just how many people watch Red Dwarf.
The first Dave airing on Thursday at 9pm achieved 1.46m on the overnight. This risen over 0.5m to 1.976m in the final consolidated figure.
The Dave Ja Vu airing on Thursday at 10pm had an overnight of 0.069m. This risen to 0.113m in the final consolidated figure.
The second Dave airing on Thursday at 11:40pm achieved a consolidated figure of 0.598m. This figure is very impressive for such a late night slot.
The third Dave airing on Saturday at 10pm achieved a consolidated figure of 0.592m.
Figures for the fourth airing, on Wednesday at 8pm will be available next week.
Adding the available consolidated figures together shows that nearly 3.3m people have viewed Red Dwarf in some form across the multiple airings. With the Wednesday repeat figures still to be included, it could yet achieve a similar total reach as ‘Back to Earth’ Episode 1. ‘Back to Earth’ Episode 1 was viewed by 4 million people in total consolidated reach.
While most of you will now have seen Fathers & Suns, there will doubtless be some that missed it and even more that want to see it again. So what are your options? Well they are limited to UK residents at the moment. Firstly, the shows are repeated through the week after there initial 9PM airings. You can view repeats at on Thursday at 11:35PM, Saturdays at 10:00PM and Wednesdays at 8:20PM. All of these can of course also be viewed one hour later on Dave Ja-Vu.
Dave have also now launched their seven-day catch-up service. As soon as each new episode has finished it is then available to view online for another 7 days. You can access the service and watch the first two episodes here. For those of you that would look a copy of the show to keep however there are two options. The whole series will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 19th, but in the meantime the series is being made available one episode at a time on iTunes. Individual episodes are released shortly after their TV airings at a cost of £2.49 and a series pass is also available for £12.99. You can find Series X on iTunes here.
Fathers & Suns: Reviews

Fathers & Suns: Viewing Figures
Series X continued to draw in a good audience share with Fathers & Suns. The overnight ratings show the the episode was viewed by 1.1m people at the 9pm hour and 0.035m people on Dave Ja Vu at 10pm. While this is down around 0.3m on ‘Trojan’, it is still above the figures for ‘Back to Earth’ Episodes 2 and 3. It is also the third highest overnight for Dave in its history. Furthermore, it is rather impressive that the second show only lost around 0.3m viewers, as a shows week on week loss is generally higher than this.

Other Series X Media
The official website for Dave has updated with a couple of Fathers & Suns related bits. First up, there is a gallery of photos from the show itself. As with Trojan, a behind the scenes gallery was also uploaded, though this time it does not feature episode specific material. Instead, it contains a collection of pictures of the various stages of Robert’s Kryten makeup application. In addition to these galleries, Dave have also updated with a quiz on Fathers & Suns which can be found here.
The Guardian ran a poll to see what their readers had been watching on TV on the 11th, and Red Dwarf came out top of the poll with a stonking 53%. You can view the poll here.

Next Time: Lemons
As you will doubtless have seen, Dave aired a trailer for ‘Lemons’ straight after Fathers & Sons had aired. This trailer has made it’s way onto YouTube and can be viewed below along with the episode synopsis:
Marooned in Britain in 23 AD, the Dwarfers need an 8 volt battery to power up their Returner Remote and get home. Remembering a lesson from school Rimmer suggests they make a battery out of lemons but the nearest lemon to Britain in 23 AD is in India 4,000 miles away. They begin their journey, a journey that will ultimately lead them to a meeting with a historical A-List Celebrity that could alter the entire history of civilisation.
Alternative Series X DVD Cover Revealed
The Official Site has updated this week with a look at the alternate cover for the Series X DVD. Click on the image below to view the page and a large version of the cover:
As you can see, it continues the theme used on the Series I-VIII covers. The photo for the front cover is absolutely perfect and feels absolutely right. It’s perhaps an odd choice to go with a colour that isn’t hugely dissimilar to the one for Series VIII considering that it was the last release to feature that design. We know Back To Earth comes in between, but unless there is a rerelease that fits in with this style we can imagine a lot of you moving X forwards. Also interesting is the choice of person to feature on the spine; Jesus. With the main cast used up, it was inevitable that a member of the guest cast would appear. There are some great ones to choose from, but Jesus is perhaps the one that will generate the most attention by virtue of who he is.
Anyway, it’s a lovely cover and exactly what we had been hoping for. No doubt many of you will be opting for this one when you get your copy of the DVD. You can also read Ganymede & Titan’s thoughts on the cover here.

Dimension Jump XVII Update
The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club has announced another two guests for next year’s Dimension Jump; Danny John Jules and Rebecca Blackstone, aka Pree. They will join the lineup that already contains Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn, Tony Hawks and Bill Pearson. More exciting guest names will be announced in the run up to the event. Registration for the event is £65 for current fan club members, and £80 for non-members. There are also special rates available to attendees for hotel rooms, and you can find details of how to book them, links to register and more general information on the Dimension Jump website.
The overnight ratings are in for Episode 2 of the new series. ‘Fathers and Suns’ was viewed by 1.1m people at the 9pm hour and 0.035m people on Dave Ja Vu at 10pm. While this is down around 0.3m on ‘Trojan’, it is still above the figures for ‘Back to Earth’ Episodes 2 and 3. It is also the third highest overnight for Dave in its history.
Repeats of Series IV also provided strong ratings in primetime. A repeat of ‘White Hole’ was watched by 0.423m viewers while 0.293m viewers stuck around for ‘Dimension Jump’.
More good news for the Red Dwarf ratings come in the demographic breakdown. The advertiser desired demographic of viewers at an age of 16-34 dominated viewership with around 40% making up the near 1.2m people who watched ‘Fathers and Suns’. With such high 16-34 viewership, it compares favourably to some big name ITV shows such as mega-hit Downton Abbey. Last Sunday Downton Abbey recorded just under 0.95m viewers in the 16-34 demographic which compares well to Red Dwarf’s near 0.5m viewers in the 16-34 demographic.
At the same time competition was relatively lower than last week.
BBC One drama Hunted fell from last weeks 4.46m to an anaemic 3.42m.
Channel 4 provided the big competition of the night. Their documentary The Plane Crash informed 3.15m viewers.
Russell Howard’s Good News on BBC Three at 9pm was down even further than last week with 0.612m. This is one of the shows lowest ratings ever.
ITV1 drama Homefront clocked in a poor primetime rating for ITV with just 2.44m at the 9pm hour.
Channel 5 provided little competition for Red Dwarf. Red Dwarf led Dave to a primetime victory against Channel 5. Dave achieving a 3% share of primetime viewing compared with Channel 5′s 2.7% share.

Series X is well and truly underway with Trojan having aired on Thursday. As such there is a huge amount of news on the new series to cover and so we are turning this week’s news roundup almost entirely over to Series X.
Trojan: Premiere
Wednesday night saw a special premiere of Trojan taking place in the Prince Charles Cinema, just of Leicester Square in London. The screening was preceded by Chris, Craig and Robert walking around Leicester Square in costume and posing for photographs for the press. The premiere itself saw the cast (minus Danny who is filming in Guadalope) and crew gather with over 100 lucky fans for a special screening of Trojan, followed by a Q&A with Doug and the cast and trailers for episodes 3 and 6. A full transcript of the Q&A is available from Wired, although they take credit for asking all of the questions asked by the audience. It was a fantastic night and it was great seeing some of you there. Hopefully you all enjoyed it just as much!

Trojan: Viewing Figures
One thing that will doubtless prove instrumental in the chances of there being further Red Dwarf after Series X are the ratings that this series achieves. ‘Trojan’ was viewed by 1.46m people at the 9pm hour and 0.069m people on Dave Ja Vu at 10pm. While not as high as the ratings for part one of Back to Earth, the show faced much tougher competition at the 9pm hour than usual and ‘Back to Earth’ Part 1 had a much higher Dave Ja Vu figure, owing to Dave Ja Vu being available on Freeview back in 2009 but being taken off Freeview in 2011. Other Series X Press & Media
As well as the reviews and previews of Trojan, there have also been a few other bits of Red Dwarf press relating to the series in a more general sense. Firstly, there is a very in depth and highly interesting interview with Doug for Starburst magazine. As well as Doug detailing why the Series has taken 3 years to hit our screens, he also goes on to explain that Series X was originally to conclude with 2 episodes featuring the return of Kochanski, which had to be ditched when the budget for location shooting was totally absorbed by the cost of the studio audience. Ganymede & Titan On Dave Edits
Ganymede & Titan have updated with the last part in a series of articles by John Hoare detailing the various edits made to Red Dwarf when it airs on Dave. This article covers I/II and, and you can also view the first two articles covering VI/V, IV/III, VII and VIII. Its well worth a read if for no other reason than to ponder the dichotomy that John raises early on: “how can a channel care so much about Red Dwarf to commission a new series, and yet give its repeats so little respect?”
The Red Dwarf Introcast
A new episode of The Red Dwarf Introcast. This episode sees Heath, Paul and Shane joined by returning special guest star Nutty Nuchtchas to take a look at Parallel Universe. The episode is available to download and you can find them on the podcast’s website and is also available on iTunes.
The overnight ratings are in for Episode 1 of the new series. ‘Trojan’ was viewed by 1.46m people at the 9pm hour and 0.069m people on Dave Ja Vu at 10pm.
The combined figure of 1.525m compares with a figure of around 2.4m for ‘Back to Earth’ Part 1. They represent Dave’s two highest figures in the channel’s history. Though comparison to ‘Back to Earth’ is not necessarily fair on ‘Trojan’. ‘Trojan’ faced much tougher competition at the 9pm hour than usual and ‘Back to Earth’ Part 1 had a much higher Dave Ja Vu figure, owing to Dave Ja Vu being available on Freeview back in 2009 but being taken off Freeview in 2011.
New heavily promoted BBC One drama, Hunted, launched to 4.46m, possibly damaged by a tough 9pm hour of competition.
Russell Howard’s Good News on BBC Three at 9pm was down 0.3m on the previous week with 0.669m.
The most surprising, and possibly damaging for Red Dwarf’s opening, was the Europa League on ITV4 where Liverpool fans laughed at their own comic character with a funny shaped head, Stewart Downing. The Europa League averages 1.4m through the evening but peaked at over 2m during the 9pm hour for the match between Liverpool and Udinese.
ITV1 will be disappointed as their drama Homefront was squeezed by all of the competition to 2.3m at the 9pm hour.
Other channels provided little competition for Red Dwarf. Channel 4 and 5 were both beaten by Dave in the 9pm hour.
The figures should reach a little higher once the Thursday 11:20 repeat are included as well as the repeats set to air next Sunday and Wednesday. Final figures which include DVR viewing should be released in the next couple of weeks though overnights generally provide a better view of success for a commercial TV station.
Dave will be pleased with these figures but it is the retention of viewers week to week that will determine just how successful the series is.
So keep on viewing, and while you are at it, why not show extra support to Series X and pre-order the DVD/Blu-Ray or buy the iTunes Series X pass. Show Dave that the fans are willing to support their big commercial endeavour.
Series X is but a few days away, and as such this will be the last time we get to run a roundup of news about it that won’t primarily be concerned with press reviews. So first of all let’s look at this week’s new clips. First of all, we finally have footage of the extended version of the trailer with the extra scene of Lister floating in space outside the window:
A new clip that leads on from that scene also appeared online and it features some lovely interaction between Craig and Robert. This clip was also the clip that Dave real eased online for people to unlock with the code ‘Wibbley’, as found during the Series II & I marathons:
During advert breaks, Dave have also been airing a clip of Kryten drying spoons with his robotic anus. There’s a sentence I never thought I’d type:
Craig Charles appeared on Loose Women earlier today and with it he brought a brand new clip that expands upon footage featured in the trailer. The clip features the gang in the cockpit of Blue Midget where Lister explains why it is up to Rimmer to create their battle-plan. (Apologies for the quality of the clip.)
One last clip of interest is the short but rather nice little interview with Doug that Sky have uploaded. The video features Doug talking about some of the show’s upcoming storylines, the vibe it was aiming for, and why a Swedish homeware store has such an influence in spacecraft interior design. Various TV guides have featured coverage of the new series. Most interestingly, TV & Satellite Week features a Red Dwarf Cover, along with a full double page spread. This can be viewed below along with the coverage in Total TV Guide which has a piece on the series and a listing for Trojan as pick of the day:
Finally, Doug made an announcement of a special screening of Trojan at The Prince Charles Cinema on Wednesday for the fans on a first come first served basis. Unsurprisingly, the tickets sold out within 8 minutes. Hopefully a few of you out there managed to snap up a ticket before they went and I’ll see you there with the rest of the Fan Club. For everyone else though, thankfully there is only a wait of one more day for the episode’s airing on Thursday. Be sure to check back with us next week for a round up of the press coverage of the episode.
The Garbage Podcast
If you missed it earlier this week, we launched ‘The Garbage Podcast’ with an episode where James and myself preview Series X. Thanks to everyone that has listened to and downloaded the podcast so far and we hope you’ve enjoyed it. The demand took us a little bit by surprise and we had to make an emergency expansion of our bandwidth after we used our entire allocation in a day, so apologies if anyone found that their downloads stopped working and it should be fine now.
We’ll be reviewing every episode of Series X in the podcast some time in the week after it’s broadcast and we’d love to include some of your thoughts on the episodes. Ganymede & Titan Articles
Ganymede & Titan have updated with two more articles by John Hoare detailing the various edits made to Red Dwarf when it airs on Dave. These two articles cover VI/V and IV/III, and you can also view the first two articles covering Series VII and VIII. Its well worth a read if for no other reason than to ponder the dichotomy that John raises early on: “how can a channel care so much about Red Dwarf to commission a new series, and yet give its repeats so little respect?”
‘The Man In The Rubber Mask’ Update
For those of you that have subscribed to the ‘Man in The Rubber Mask’ updates, the latest chapter is now available to download. It covers the time spent making Back to Earth and leads us right up to Series X just in time for the new series’ airing next week. If you haven’t already, you can download the audio book and subscribe to all further updates by making a one off subscription here for £4.99 for what will eventually amount to over 10 hours of audio. The full book will also be released in a Kindle/E-book edition as well as a traditional printed version once Series X has aired.
